[Slums]

The tallest‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍ and most cramped buildings in District 53 stood here, housing the remnants of human struggle and decay.

Collapsed steel frames leaned between the structures, turning the towering buildings into a greyish-black wasteland.

A deathly silence prevailed and was only broken by the sound of shoes stepping on water.

An Yu walked through the narrow streets with a sniper rifle on his back. His blood-red eyes were cold and murderous, and as the wind rustled, he slowly scanned his surroundings with his gaze.

The blood on his prison uniform had not yet dried, and he walked very slowly, a mix of weakness and killing intent that created a strange sense of oppression. This pressure, transmitted through the recording device, traveled thousands of kilometers until it enveloped the Black Tower’s High Peak.

An Yu had not caused any trouble for ten minutes.

The calm before the Grim Reaper went berserk.

The earpiece suddenly crackled with noise, and Qin Zhilu’s voice came through.

“Are you okay?”

An Yu frowned and touched his ear. Qin Zhilu continued, “My communication cannot be forcibly cut off.”

“……”

“Two octopuses evolved to develop individual consciousness. The mother body’s death didn’t turn them into zombies. They reached out to the surviving humans. I just took some time to deal with them.”

An Yu replied, “Oh. You don’t need to explain it to me.”

Qin Zhilu stated objectively, “This isn’t an explanation. I hope you can learn to control the overall situation and understand all possible changes.”

An Yu paused. “Got it.”

Suddenly, a flash of light appeared on a fallen lamppost ahead. An Yu didn’t stop walking, but after two more steps, he swung the sniper rifle over his shoulder, leaped up, and smashed the rifle into the ground!

Water and dust splashed everywhere!

The small octopus aberrant, which had just poked half its head out of the water, had its head smashed, and thick mucus mixed into the water.

An Yu picked up the remnants of the octopus and found that this aberrant was particularly weak, making people doubt its infection capability.

It seemed that the guy hiding in the shadows had put all his production skills into the eight copies, leaving himself to produce only this trash.

“Still fighting?” Qin Zhilu’s tone paused, “You’re badly injured and your survival value is only 12%.”

“Thank you for your concern, sir.” An Yu threw away the octopus and continued moving forward, “I’m fine.”

Qin Zhilu was silent for a long time.

So long that An Yu couldn’t help but glance at the terminal screen to confirm the other was still on the channel.

“Are you angry?” Qin Zhilu suddenly asked.

An Yu’s steps abruptly stopped.

“No.” His expression was cold, “I awakened an inexplicable state on the battlefield. Your testing and probing were reasonable, sir.”

“I won’t point a gun at you anymore.” Qin Zhilu seemed to sigh, “I didn’t expect that the psychological shadow left on you in the snowfield would continue even after you awakened. I haven’t made a mistake in judgment for a long time. I was too arrogant. I’m sorry.”

He said he was sorry.

An Yu’s thoughts jammed for a moment because “I’m sorry” was one of the most pitiful phrases in the lexicon Ling Qiu had taught him. It was used for reconciliation and self-preservation, second only to “Please.”

He was momentarily confused; Ling Qiu had only taught him how to say this phrase, but he didn’t teach him how to respond when someone else said it.

Racking his brains, An Yu finally replied, “Have you ever made mistakes in judgment before?”

Qin Zhilu hummed, “District 95. I’ve told you about it.”

Zhu Tao said that District 95 was an experience that Qin Zhilu didn’t like to talk about.

This seemed like another moment of vulnerability.

An Yu blinked, finally slowing his pace. “I’m not angry. Please don’t worry, sir. I can continue with the mission.”

“I know you can. I’m just a bit worried about you.”

Qin Zhilu didn’t wait for him to answer, and said, “I know what you’re planning. You need me. I’ll go find you now.”

An Yu waited for the call to end and jumped to Xi De’s channel. “Where are you?”

Xi De sounded a bit annoyed, “I’m patrolling between several places where the aberration tide is having a party. I have to ask, you’re not trying to get High Peak to do a precision strike, are you? It’s useless. To ensure the complete eradication of the distortion genes, we’ll need to use thermal bombs. Even with just one strike point, District 53 will become a deep crater.”

An Yu thought for a moment, “It would flatten the city if it landed, but what if it was in the air?”

“In the air?” Xi De sounded incredulous. “So, are you trying to kill the aberrants or my subordinates?”

An Yu didn’t explain further and instructed, “From now on, stay close to me. Inform High Peak to launch thermal weapons in twenty minutes. Target area is the low-income Zone T. Don’t worry about the energy core’s location.”

He suddenly remembered the “overall perspective” that Qin Zhilu wanted him to exercise and added: “Let your subordinates rest, find a comfortable spot, and watch the aberrants run.”

Xi De didn’t respond for a while. An Yu, puzzled, touched his earpiece. “Is the channel down?”

Xi De took a deep breath, “I’m waiting for your explanation.”

The channel fell silent, and Xi De irritably gripped his terminal. “At least tell me where to find you.”

“Low-income Zone T. I thought I just mentioned that.” An Yu stopped and looked up at the towering slum buildings, his gaze becoming even colder. “More precisely, Zone T’s Fifth Building, Room 1414.”

He could smell it, a nauseating stench.

He is very good at finding a place to hide.

An Yu examined the wounds on his body while going upstairs.

The fatal wound from [Frog Tongue] No. 2 on his neck had been healed by Grape, but the cuts and bruises from fights, the blood welts from octopus tentacles, and the bruises caused by the torture and gene catalyst experiments were all repeatedly torn open in battle.

He was truly covered in injuries.

He stood outside Room 1414 for a long time without moving.

The recorder outside the building observed him through a window, noting how he slowly lowered his head, how his blood-stained white hair covered his face, how his chest gradually heaved more and more violently, how his body trembled, and how the sniper rifle slid off his shoulder, its butt hitting the ground.

The people in the Black Tower became anxious.

“What’s happening to him?”

“His injuries are too severe. He might not make it!”

“12%—any Protector would have collapsed by now.”

“An Yu…he’s still human, made of flesh and blood…”

“Protectors around the Low-Income area converge on Building 5 in Zone T! Ensure An Yu’s safety at all costs!”

“Wait…wait a moment! He seems to be talking to himself!”

“What’s he saying?”

“Zoom in! Can anyone read lips?”

The recorder anxiously moved between several windows, finally finding an angle that captured An Yu’s face—

He slowly raised his head and the coldness in his red eyes gradually dissipated,  being replaced with a look of confusion.

Like a wounded animal trembling and awaiting death.

This little animal’s lips moved, repeatedly saying the same words.

After a few seconds of silence in the command room, someone hesitantly said, “He seems to be repeating: ‘You’re badly hurt, you’re going to die soon…’?”

The truth cast a deathly silence over the command hall again.

Everyone in the Black Tower watched An Yu silently muttering to himself and someone nervously asked, “Is he really dying, or is he brainwashing himself?”

“Both. Perhaps this is his hunting method.”

High Peak zoomed in on the screen to focus on that figure and murmured, “An Yu…what exactly are you planning to do?”

Room 1414 was next to this floor’s public restroom and it was An Yu’s dormitory. It was perpetually filled with the stench of decay, and it was so fetid that even within the deplorable slums, it surpassed the quality of other low-income areas.

But at this moment, the stronger stench of aberrants covered up the previous smell, and there seemed to be an unsettling fluctuation in the air, like a huge energy.

After a moment, An Yu’s lips finally stopped moving as he reached out to press the door’s keypad lock.

The password was the default: 1222—his birthday. Anyone who knew his ID could easily crack it, but he never worried about theft at home, after all, his household was penniless. Ling Qiu once said that if someone was willing to steal An Yu himself, that would be the best scenario.

Thinking about Ling Qiu’s exasperated expression at the time, a hint of warmth flashed in his red eyes before they swiftly returned to a blank state.

With a beep, a rather impolite electronic female voice said, “Identity verification successful. Low-income Resident An Yu, entry allowed.”

Low-income Resident An Yu…

An Yu glanced at the lock and pushed the door open.

The room was really cramped and dim, not even as big as the toilet in the Spire dormitory.

Seven or eight cardboard boxes were stacked outward, forming a makeshift cabinet. Inside the cabinet were a few patched-up clothes, two packs of compressed biscuits, and copies of the “Bait City Daily” and his own handwritten “District 53 Gossip Tabloid” that Ling Qiu sent him every day.

Aside from that, the only furniture in the room was a narrow single bed.

A person sat on the bed with their back to the door, their physique identical to those [Frog Tongues] aberrants. He was playing with a small metallic polyhedron and only turned around when he heard the door open.

When An Yu clearly saw his face, his red eyes suddenly contracted. That face had ten eyes arranged in two rows, eight of which had turned into blood holes.

But what shocked him the most was not this.

He had expected the super-aberrant to have a face like the [Frog Tongue] with ID 0313’s. It was even wearing ID 0313’s welfare outfit, but its face looked 70% like Ling Qiu.

An Yu’s gaze fell on the bed. There was a copy of “Bait City Daily” thrown there—after joining the military, Ling Qiu’s achievements had spread throughout District 53. He was a pride of the low-income human zones, and his photo occupied the entire front page. But now, the part of the paper with his face had been cut out.

The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue] had created eight copies based on his human gene appearance, yet he actually changed his face to resemble Ling Qiu’s.

Suddenly, An Yu’s earpiece crackled to life. A calm middle-aged man’s voice said, “This is the High Peak. An Yu, he has an energy core in his hand, be careful.”

The object capable of supporting the Main City’s dome for three years was now spinning in the [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue]’s fingertips, being toyed with like a child’s plaything.

An Yu and the [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue]’s eyes met. He took a step back and grabbed the door handle.

The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue]’s logic was very similar to that of its copies. Seeing that its prey suddenly reached the door and wanted to run, it almost instinctively spit out its blood-red long tongue and branded An Yu’s shoulder with a fierce whip!

The room was too small; the unexpected intruder crashed into the wall and fell helplessly to the ground.

The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue] smelled an intense fear from this human—a fear typical of lowly beings.

It didn’t know what was happening outside but it knew the copies it’d worked so hard to make died one after the other. It was worrying about how to rebuild the city order it had carefully designed, and then this guy came right to its doorstep.

“I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before…” The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue] tilted its head, scrutinizing An Yu. This human seemed familiar, perhaps he was someone the boy who got his genes devoured by it knew, but that wasn’t important. What mattered was his genes were pure and an excellent embryo choice.

But… there was also a mysterious temptation that made it want to devour him completely, leaving no bones behind.

Should I keep him for use or eat him?

An Yu leaned half of his body against the wall, his hair slowly dripping with blood.

His red eyes had lost their focus and revealed a dying aura.

The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue] belatedly realized that this human seemed to be severely injured. Now that he received another blow from it, although his chest was still heaving, the intense trembling indicated early signs of human shock.

Whether to keep or eat, it had to decide quickly. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be able to nurture him, and he wouldn’t be fresh anymore when it ate him.

The [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue] realized something was wrong, but its instincts had already driven the tongue tip to explore the indescribable temptation deep within. Just as it was about to taste it, a massive roar erupted in its brain and body. It didn’t even have time to look down at its own body before its last two eyes burst at the same time!

Xi De’s distortion trait was the Phoenix Golden Wings. Distorted genes were usually more concentrated in the organs exhibiting the distortion traits. Through those fiery golden flames, An Yu saw the inhuman muscles and blood vessels beneath the wings. He murmured to himself, “The data shows your genetic entropy is 280,000. I wonder if it’s higher than [Ten-Eyed Frog Tongue]’s…”

An Yu answered seriously, “I do, but not much. That’s what sir said.” He gently touched the blazing hot wings and whispered, “I’ve never had contact with avian genes before, and your mutation is a mythical creature. It should have a good effect…”

Xi De was silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed, “You maniac!”

No wonder An Yu unusually asked him not to go too far away; he had been waiting for this moment all along. Perhaps he had planned this from the moment he initiated the first hunt.

Qin Zhilu had carefully chosen him, and it turns out he’s such a smart yet scheming guy!

But maybe it’s exactly this kind of guy who is qualified to overlook the ladder.

The Phoenix Golden Wings fiercely cut through the clouds, and Xi De’s eyes gleamed with arrogance. “But I do like maniacs the most.”

The blood vessels under the golden wings bulged, and An Yu drew the short knife to cut his palm, then reversed the blade to open Xi De’s blood vessel.

As the wound neared the blazing flames, the intense burning pain made him tightly grasp Xi De’s wings. Xi De hissed but couldn’t spare a moment to stop him, focusing all his energy on actively infecting An Yu.

In the earphone, the decision-makers at the Black Tower were collectively panicking.

“Xi De! Are you infecting An Yu?”

“He’s crazy, and you’re going crazy with him?”

“What are you guys trying to do?!”

“District 53 isn’t important; An Yu is the most valuable! Do you understand???!!”

“Although he won’t mutate, the infection will cause physical damage. He’s already at his limit!”

“He’s barely holding on, Xi De! Stop!”

An Yu automatically blocked out those voices. “Restrain your desire. Don’t try to obtain my genes.”

“I’m trying to resist. I can somewhat understand those greedy vermin now,” Xi De gritted his teeth. “What the hell are you…?”

Do you even know how tempting you are?

An Yu sighed lightly, “That’s the problem. I’ve come this far, yet I still don’t know what I am.”

The hand clutching the wing tightened even more. For the first time, Xi De felt excitement in the midst of pain, but the increasingly piercing life alerts from the terminal made him somewhat worried. Just as he was about to call An Yu’s name, a loud bang echoed—

On the ground, dozens of high-rise buildings in the entire low-income area suddenly disappeared. In the next moment, they reappeared directly in the sky.

The trembling voice in the earphone reported, “Officer! We don’t know what happened, but the low-income area suddenly appeared in the sky, at an altitude of 1,050 meters!”

This time, those buildings hovered at that height, not falling down.

But Xi De sensed that An Yu was already tense and exerting all his strength only to keep that area at that altitude.

The alarm’s wail was heart-wrenching, and the continuous infection caused An Yu’s survival value to rapidly drop from 5% to 3%.

“1,500——”

“1,600——”

“1,800!”

1%!

“An Yu,” Xi De said regretfully, “To evade the thermal bomb, you need a vertical height of 3,000 meters. You’ve done your best, you… hiss!”

An Yu held the knife with his other hand and forcefully pulled out a section of the blood vessel, ripping it from Xi De’s wing and inserting it into his own chest.

2%!

Blood dripped onto Xi De’s back, but he was so shocked he couldn’t feel the pain. Xi De trembled and said: “An Yu… stop! You can’t hold on, you…”

An Yu focused on the shadow of the buildings in the air. In his deep red eyes, the low-income area buildings disappeared from the sky again and reappeared at a higher altitude.

“Sir!” Bo trembled as he reported, “Altitude 1,400 meters—”

Another flash!

“1,500—”

“Black Tower announcement: the thermal bomb will launch in 30 seconds and is expected to hit in 36 seconds. All Protectors, please evade.”

“1,600—”

“1,800!”

1%!

Xi De’s back suddenly had an extra weight as An Yu could no longer hold on, kneeling on Xi De’s back to barely support his upper body.

The blood quickly drained from his already pale face, leaving only those red eyes burning with madness.

After stabilizing himself, An Yu once again extended the dagger towards Xi De’s other golden wing.

“An Yu,” Xi De’s eyes were warm, “Human life is precious, but compared to the lives in District 53, your value to humanity is greater! Stop!

The channels in An Yu’s earphone constantly switched, with High Peak, researchers, Protectors, familiar and unfamiliar voices all frantically trying to stop him.

“Mr. An Yu, we don’t know what you’re doing, but please stop!”

“Don’t sacrifice yourself for Bait City! District 53 isn’t worth it!”

“There are hardly any humans left in this Bait City!”

“This is an empty city! An empty city!”

In the midst of the clamor, Jiang Xiao’s weak voice particularly stood out, “Please, live… don’t do something foolish.”

Before pulling out Xi De’s second blood vessel, An Yu tore off the thin earphone from his ear and threw it away.

It was unbearably noisy.

How dare these people think they could influence his decision?

He held the knife in front of him and the blade reflected his red eyes, slicing through the shadow of the suspended buildings in the sky.

As the blade fell, a cool breeze blew and a hand wrapped around his waist from behind.

For a moment, An Yu almost instinctively wanted to stab the person behind him.

But he soon woke up—because his body remembered the feel of being caressed by the leather.

Qin Zhilu had temporarily acquired Bo’s genes, fluttering with a pair of black, wide wings – standing high in the air.

The murderous aura directly overwhelmed Xi De’s fiery presence.

He embraced An Yu, his gaze falling on the blood dripping from An Yu’s chest, and he frowned.

“In your awakened state, ignoring your superior is one thing, but where did you learn to pretend to comply while defying orders?” he softly reprimanded. “Didn’t I tell you to wait for me?”

An Yu stared at the buildings in the sky. “Let me go.”

Severing the connection with Xi De coupled with the rapid loss of strength caused him to lose control over that space.

The low-income area began to rapidly fall under the force of gravity, falling faster and faster.

“Ten seconds until the thermal bomb lands!”

“All Protectors, evade!”

“Law! Get An Yu out of there now!”

Qin Zhilu also threw away his earphone.

“I told you, I know what you’re trying to do,” he calmly said. “And I also told you, you need me, and only me.”

An Yu felt the voice getting closer until the warm breath was on his neck.

The black wings stirred the air, and in the vast turbulence, his hand tightened around An Yu’s waist.

“Focus. You can do it.”

“With me here, you can do anything you want.”

Qin Zhilu gently turned his head and searched for a while before finally finding a spot without old injuries and pressed his teeth against An Yu’s neck.

An Yu suddenly froze.

Qin Zhilu was indeed just a human.

Because of this, An Yu often subconsciously forgot that Qin Zhilu was the highest and most chaotic existence known to mankind.

“Five!”

The skin on An Yu’s neck was cut by teeth and a slight pain spread.

He had been infected so many times, but this was the most gentle one.

A massive roar arose from the depths of An Yu’s consciousness, bringing an unprecedented sense of grandeur and peace.

Before he realized what had happened, the low-income area, which was about to hit the ground, suddenly vanished and reappeared above the safe altitude, breaking through everyone’s sight!

“Four!”

The Protectors in the sky were almost stunned. They panicked and temporarily lowered their altitude to prevent accidental injuries, But before they could get into position, the low-income area flashed again—this time at an altitude of over 6,000 meters, far away from all buildings and people, making it difficult for them to even look up.

“Three!”

One final flash!

10,000 meters in the sky.

The place that had accompanied An Yu for ten years was finally completely separated from District 53.

An Yu raised his head and his red eyes reflected the gray and black ruins high above and the shadows of buildings filled with aberrants.

Before the countdown ended, the thermal bomb collided with the low-income area at ten thousand meters high!

A bright white mushroom cloud exploded in the sky, rising and then dissipating.

The world returned to silence in the massive sound wave and flames. All chaotic life forms vanished at that moment and the miasma dissipated, leaving only the dazzling light and heat waves in the sky.

And Qin Zhilu’s hand around An Yu’s waist.

The terminal’s survival rating stopped at 1%. Perhaps the wound created by Qin Zhilu was too small, and his infection didn’t cause An Yu’s survival value to continue to drop.

That state quietly left; it felt like a part of his heart had suddenly been hollowed out, falling into a huge void.

He lowered his head and looked at the small Bait City on the ground.

District 53 had finally returned to its former state, except the low-income area had completely disappeared, leaving only a barren land.

He had finally returned District 53 to Ling Qiu, and he had finally buried it with his own hands.

He buried the ugly, the despicable, and the desperate.

The place that had given him his brother, accompanied him through his naive growth, and was destined to be separated from his life.

The slums.
