The Protector’s Oath
by M1zushiHumans cannot enter the Spire, so Yan Xi only escorted An Yu to the entrance.
An Yu saw that statue once again.
It stood silently in the center of the Spire’s first-floor lobby, a man in a military uniform standing solemnly with both hands holding up an emblem.
The emblem was shaped like layers of grass wrapping around a star.
An Yu softly read the inscription at the base of the statue.
[The Human Union Act: Protector’s Oath]
“Always be loyal to humanity, no matter in what form I exist.”
“I accept all conditional trust.”
“I accept all limitless exploitation.”
“I accept all unexplained executions.”
“I will forever be loyal to humanity, no matter how I am destroyed.”
The man’s profile was solemn and stern, with a subtle sense of familiarity.
“An Yu! Darling!”
A sharp voice nearly startled An Yu. Billy was standing at the elevator, waving enthusiastically. “You’re finally back!”
The transparent elevator rose straight up. Every Protector who passed by outside the elevator stopped in their tracks and most bowed respectfully to An Yu, while others looked at him with complex expressions, no longer as scornful or venomous as before.
“Do you know how many people admire you? My God, the events in District 53 have been the talk of the Spire. Everyone’s been waiting for you to wake up, finally!” Billy puffed out his chest, as if he were the one feeling vindicated. “I knew you were special! You must be the chosen one!”
An Yu frowned. “But you said that every aberrant thinks they’re the chosen one, but in the end, they’re just a little minion with some abilities.”
“I was talking about myself! Didn’t High Peak tell you? I’ve been honored to be chosen as your little minion!” Billy pushed him out of the elevator. “Your things from District 53 have been returned to your dorm. Check if anything’s missing and place an order ASAP.”
An Yu was confused. “Place an order? I don’t have any money.”

“Unbelievable, right?” Billy exclaimed, his hands on his hips. “That anonymous big shot who bet a million points was Law! He started accumulating capital for his supervisee before the mission even began! On the day of the bet, the anonymous user and ‘Grape’ divided the entire pot between them, then a massive transfer came through, and everyone finally realized what had happened! Let me tell you, the whole Spire was lit up all night, no one could sleep! Those Aberrants thieves were so jealous they went crazy, and the gym was packed with people trying to vent their frustration on the punching bags! An Yu! An Yu, are you even listening to me?!”

An Yu’s gaze fell on his lips—there was a small old scar quietly settled at the corner of his mouth. Eight days ago, when An Yu bit his neck, that scar had lightly brushed against his skin. During his sleep over the past few days, he had repeatedly recalled that moment in his dreams.

“Finally, you’re back,” Billy sighed with relief, then asked in a lowered voice, “How was it this time?”
Qin Zhilu replied nonchalantly with a brief “Hmm,” as his eyes swept over An Yu from head to toe. “You seem to have recovered well,” he said lightly.
An Yu showed him the terminal. “Sir, I’m finally at 100%.”
Like an illusion, the cold black eyes in front of him seemed to relax for a brief moment.
“I know. I have access to your data.”
The voice seemed a little tired.
An Yu asked, “What exactly have you been doing these past few days?”
“Fulfilling some duties and obligations I’ve long been accustomed to, though this time it took a bit longer.” Qin Zhilu adjusted his gloves. “Fortunately, I made it in time. Let’s go.”
“Where are we going?”
“To the vigil for District 53,” Qin Zhilu paused, “to properly say goodbye to Ling Qiu.”

(Missed
Bean Bread)
No one ever told me that turning around meant my last chance to reunite with them.
When I heard the news, I remained relatively calm.
After all, in an era like this, we should get used to the fact that the times we are together are less than the times we’re separated. With brief reunions and lifelong separations.
But if I could do it all over again, even if it meant risking being punished, I would have stopped the car and met my sister.
I would have asked her to break off a piece of that soy bread for me.
The texture of soy bread is actually quite rough, with only a mild fragrance of flour and beans—nothing sweet enough to be addictive.
But just one bite could bring a lasting sense of peace.
No one can forget the taste of what their mother used to cook.
No matter what kind of world we’re in, that will never change.
